10 Things Bringing Me Joy This Week
Because if we have one more plane crash, I'm going to lose it.
As our modern Emily Dickinson, Gabby Windey, so eloquently said, “Any kind of positivity is toxic. Because are you living on this Earth?” As I’m writing this, I’m upset about: the FAA air traffic control staff Trump fired, making us less safe in the air (I already have flying anxiety); the 14 people who died — and others missing — in the storm across Georgia, West Virginia, Kentucky and how this administration is ignoring climate change, setting us back years; and the bird flu outbreak that continues to grow because, once again, Trump has no plan. And that’s not even getting into my own life that’s currently getting hit by disaster after disaster.
Later this week, I’m going to deep dive into scalp health and show you some really gross (and satisfying) photos, but for now, I need a little joy — and you might, too.
Network TV being back. Ever since I sat in my middle school bedroom watching back-to-back WB shows (Roswell, Dawson’s Creek, and Felicity — to name a few), I’ve loved network TV. I find it comforting in a way reality TV just can’t provide. Is it the predictability? The happy ending? Probably. While nothing can compare to those WB days, network TV is finally good again. I’m probably watching a dozen shows but some current favorites are: The Pitt (close enough, welcome back, John Carter!); season 3 of The White Lotus and Yellowjackets'; XO, Kitty, Severance, and the list goes on and on. Of course, any new Law & Order, too.
The way L.A. came together after the fires.
Kamala Harris getting a standing ovation at a Broadway show. She deserves our thank you forever and ever.
Small acts of resistance. It’s easy to hide under the covers when awful news is thrown at you. It’s overwhelming! But trust me when I say, even the smallest efforts make a difference. What’s bringing me joy is seeing teachers protecting their kids from ICE, blue dots in red states supporting those seeking an abortion, and other cities in other countries protesting for us.
Girly things. Charms on everything! I’ve put charms on my shoes, on my boots, my bags — anything and everything. Is it too much? Maybe but I don’t care. These little trinkets bring me joy.
Pink sneakers. On that note, I’m dying for a pair of pink sneakers for spring. I have my eye on the Salomon XT-6 sneakers in Mahogany Rose / Earth Brown / Flamingo Pink. I wanted the Sandy Liang collab but those sold out quick.
The small amount of body diversity at NYFW. Are the runways getting less diverse with every passing season? Yes. According to Vogue Business, a whopping 94.9 percent of models are sizes 0 to 4. But that just means we need to support the brands doing it right, such as Selkie, LaQuan Smith, Christian Siriano, Collina Strada, and 3.1 Phillip Lim. They showed a beautiful, diverse mix of skin tones, abilities, and body types.
L.A. can breathe again. I got used to wearing masks again, but this time focusing on outdoors. The air quality in Los Angeles, thanks to the devastation caused by the fires, has been awful. It finally rained and the air is a bit more clear. Now, we just have to help people rebuild.
Beauty products have never been cuter. Most of my skincare is pretty boring. At 40 years old, the best products for my skin are ones made by estheticians and dermatologists, which are usually in simple grey packaging. But makeup is FUN. I’m loving Korean beauty brand Fwee and its colorful lip and cheek balm in tiny little keychains. It’s not just cute — it’s a stellar product.
I have the clearest skin of my life. If you have ever had cystic acne, you know how great it feels when you haven’t had a breakout for a while. I know I’ve been pretty lucky with my skin in general, but I’ve had some painful hormonal acne in the past few years. What I’m doing right now seems to be working. I try a lot of products but keep going back to the Rhode Pineapple Refresh cleanser, followed by Shani Darden Skin Care Rescue Serum, which has azelaic acid that my skin loves. It’s never been smoother! To keep dryness at bay but not clog my pores, I’m loving Renee Rouleau Skin Recovery Balm.
